How to play
- One real day a day: an animal, or the people of one country, and one thing they spend hours on, such as sleep, meals or housework.
- The dial is the 24 hours of a day. It starts empty. Drag round it to shade how many of those hours go on that one thing, or tap where you think it ends.
- Tap Show the real hours. The real arc draws in over yours, and yellow marks the part you got wrong.
One day a day, the same for everyone. A new one arrives at midnight.
Where the figures come from
Each figure was measured by scientists, or counted by a national statistics office, and was read on two websites; both are linked under the answer. Where the two differ, the answer is a band, and anything inside it is right. Within 15 minutes counts as spot on.
A country's figure is an average over everyone in the group, working or not, on all seven days of the week. That is why some of them look low.
The pictures
The animals' silhouettes come from PhyloPic, a free library of drawings of living things. Artists who ask for credit are named under the answer. PhyloPic does not endorse this site. The flags are drawn by the page.
