How to play
- One real animal a day, doing one thing: resting, diving, flying, hibernating.
- The heart in the middle starts at 60 beats a minute, about your own at rest. Drag up to make it faster and down to make it slower, or slide the scale on the right, from 1 to 2,000 beats a minute.
- When it feels right, tap Show its heart. The real heart appears beside yours, and you see how many times too fast or too slow you were.
- Tap the speaker to hear the beat. On some phones you feel it too.
One heart a day, the same for everyone. A new one arrives at midnight.
Where the figures come from
Each heart rate was measured by scientists, vets or doctors, and was read on two websites; both are linked under the answer. A heart's pace moves from minute to minute, so anything within about 15% of the real figure counts as spot on.
Fast hearts
Nothing on this page flashes, and nothing pulses more than three times a second. A heart that beats faster than that holds still, and the line underneath shows its pace instead.
The pictures
The silhouettes come from PhyloPic, a free library of drawings of living things. Artists who ask for credit are named under the answer. PhyloPic does not endorse this site.
