Twin or Trap Pass the phone

Same word. Same meaning?

Each word looks the same in two languages. A twin means the same in both; a trap means something else. Read out the word and its sentence, talk it over, then all vote at once. Right scores 1 point, or 2 if most of you got it wrong.

Names are optional. Sit in this order: the phone goes round, and each of you reads a word out in turn.

All ten words

    How to play

    1. The phone goes round. Whoever holds it reads out the word and its sentence, accent and all.
    2. Talk it over: is it a twin, the same meaning in both languages, or a trap, a false friend that means something else?
    3. On three, everyone votes at once: thumbs up for twin, thumbs down for trap.
    4. Show the answer, then tap everyone who was right. Right scores 1 point; right while most of the table was wrong scores 2.
    5. Pass the phone on. Ten words make a game, and most points wins.

    Only clear cases

A twin shares its meanings in both languages; a trap shares none. A word that is a false friend in only some of its meanings is left out, and so are words that are not family-friendly.

    Where the words come from

Every meaning was read in two dictionaries, named and linked under each answer. The meanings, the sentences and their English are Logicers' own, written to show only the meaning that was checked.
